After the civil war a peacetime force was reassembled. The initial recruitment of six new regiments was to include only black enlisted men in which white officer were to go out and recruit; but Senator Benjamin Wade of Ohio added a provision for two black Cavalry regiments. They made up the 9th & 10th Calvary and the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry which in the reduction of forces in 1869 were consolidated into 24th and 25th Infantry. From the 9th & 10th Cavalry and 24th Infantry came some of the most dedicated and courageous soldiers that forged ahead to breach enemy works, rescue comrades under fire, and protect and advance the national and regimental colors.
There were 23 Medals of Honor awarded to these brave buffalo soldiers of the 9th and 10th Calvary and 24th Infantry. It is with this painting that artist John Will Davis gives recognition to their efforts and the eventual awarding of "THE MEDAL OF HONOR".
