Copyright Summers During the period from 1867 until 1885 black troops of the 9th and 10th Cavalry from Fort Davis participated in the Indian Wars of the late 19th century by patrolling the southwest Texas frontier. Together these units compiled a notable record of military accomplishments against the Indians. The black soldiers were often ferocious and courageous in battle, even when outnumbered. Out of respect, the Indians called them "Buffalo Soldiers". The Buffalo was a sacred animal to the Indians therefore the Cavalrymen accepted the title with great pride.
